2008 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. With the segment's only rear-hinged side access doors, the regular cab gives excellent recline space and an easy reach to everything dropped behind the seat. At the other end of the scale, premium models include two-tone leather seats, polished 22-inch wheels and other touches: within those extremes lies something for everyone. 2008 marks the first availability of an xl-grade supercrew with 5. 5- or 6. 5-foot bed: maximum people space with a work truck ethic. Detail changes for 2008 run the gamut from functional to decorative, the latter a wheels and stripes package for stx models, the former a standard tachometer for xl and stx with manual transmission, tire pressure monitors on the heavy-duty package, plus the availability of a cargo management system, remote start, telescoping towing mirrors, and a rearview camera (that does not require purchase of a navigation system). with one of the deepest beds in the half-ton pickup segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,050 pounds. A foose edition f-150 designed by hot-rod master chip foose will be available as a late-2008 model. The base f-150 xl 17,345) is a short, regular cab two-wheel drive. Wheels are steel, the grille is black and bumpers painted, vinyl covers the floor and seats, and the audio is am/fm. However, it does have intermittent wipers, map lights, a 40/20/40 split bench front seat with driver lumbar adjustment, and on supercabs 23,440) air conditioning. On regular cabs 24,105-30,645) the fx4 is $5,750 over the fx2 and there's no long-wheelbase fx4; on supercab and supercrew 28,700-35,445), the 4wd version is a $3,295 premium. the lariat label is reserved for more luxurious, car-like interiors, and does not include regular cab or flareside models; retail prices range from $29,895-$35,595. Fancy bits include 18-inch aluminum wheels, power heated mirrors with signal repeaters, climate control, leather-trimmed seats and steering wheel, powered driver's seat, trip computer, light-faced gauges, and chrome and arizona beige trim. for 2008, ford will build 5,000 lariat limited f-150s, replete with serial-number plates, spun-metal instrument cluster trim, two-tone leather cabin, color-matched grille and bumpers, and three-dimensional chrome bed side badging. Limited models are offered only as 139-inch wheelbase supercrews in two- 35,160) or all-wheel drive 38,160). top tier among regular production models is the king ranch, with castano leather modeled after the saddles that roamed the texas ranch. Exterior trim is similar to lariats, with color-matching components and arizona beige accents. At this level, items such as heated power seats and power-folding mirrors are standard. And the 2008 ford f-150 shows the evolution of 70 years of function. Angular means easy to clean, easy to park and gives maximum inside volume for outside space. The f-150 is easily recognized in any trim level by the circular front lights within a rectangular housing, stepped front window ledge, opening rear doors on the regular cab, and the tall bed. For 2008, extendable dual-element towing mirrors bring the f-150 in line with the bigger super duty pickups, as well as the ram, titan, and tundra. Any cosmetic sacrifice is well worth the extra visibility with a trailer behind. pillars between the doors may yield a blind spot for those who sit more rearward and everyone should appreciate the windshield pillar designed to help preserve forward vision. The flareside really is more stylish than the styleside bed, that which is essentially a box with some character lines in the sheetmetal, and more space within. The chrome harley badges are a bit much for some of us, but it drew many admiring looks. interiorford has all bases covered inside the f-150, with plenty of patterns, textures and finishes, including at least three different gauges clusters, and the choice of a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat or captain's chairs in many models. Captain's chairs on fx and lariat models, especially with power adjustment and the optional adjustable pedals, provide good driver positioning for virtually everyone. Finding it may take some time because the backrest angle adjustment is manual and the power controls are on the side of the seat with the door very close.

1999 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Minor improvements throughout make it better. introductionif mousetraps were 17 feet long, one might characterize the expedition as ford's better mousetrap. Since its introduction three years ago, ford's biggest sport-utility vehicle has been a resounding sales success. The assembly plant in wayne, michigan, has been running full steam to meet the demand for the expedition and its luxurious near-twin, the lincoln navigator. why is the expedition so successful? The reasons may go beyond the current enthusiasm for large sport-utilities. The expedition is selling like hot cakes at least partly because it does everything it was designed to do and it does it well. Its good looks certainly don't hurt, either. with demand running high, ford has wisely made only evolutionary changes for 1999. Both engines get more power -- without hurting epa fuel economy ratings. The expedition has been certified for 1999 as a low-emissions vehicle, or lev, in states that have adopted california's tougher emissions regulations. a new front fascia, grille and bumper system with fog lamps incorporated into the lower valence give the expedition a fresh look. And the base model comes with more standard equipment; even though the base price has gone up, this move actually lowers many out-the-door prices. walkaroundthe stylists at ford took a sensible approach when they set out to shape the expedition. They already had two winners to their credit -- the f-150 pickup and the explorer. So they borrowed the best elements from each to create another success. From nose to windshield, the expedition shares sheet metal with the f-150. No panels interchange between expedition and explorer, but the resemblance is unmistakable. this combination of ingredients works well. The expedition is handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect attention to aerodynamics. It's a design that pays off with improved fuel efficiency and reduced wind noise. As a matter of necessity, the sides and back are shaped more for utility than style. Clever use of trim and rounded corners provides some visual definition, however. stretching more than 17 feet from nose to tail, the expedition is certainly no compact. There's no way to disguise that. Gm's suburban is even longer, adding a foot-and-a-half to the total. Ford touts the expedition's shorter length as a benefit when trying to fit into a garage. With little demand for plain, entry-level vehicles in this class, ford equips the xlt well and the eddie bauer even better. Two seating configurations are available. Ordered with optional front bucket seats and a center bench, the expedition can comfortably haul five passengers. Ordered with the standard front full-width seat and center bench makes room for six passengers. Well-padded chairs provide comfortable seating. the optional third-row bench provides seating for two more passengers -- three if they are small. First- and second-row occupants get separate heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls; a third set of controls for the third seat is optional. a curved dashboard houses instruments and controls where they can easily be reached. Soft-touch coverings are applied to switches and door panels. The window switches are lighted internally at night, a nice touch that not all vehicles carry. One new optional feature this year is an industry first: at the touch of a dashboard-mounted switch, the pedal cluster can be electrically adjusted fore-and-aft. Surprisingly, this bulk doesn't make it especially difficult to drive. Speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering works in the driver's favor by keeping steering effort low. Brake pedal feel is light, yet precise. Lots of large windows, along with big mirrors, make it easy to see in all directions. Extra care and attention is required when maneuvering in close-quarters, however. the ride quality is good, though it is not as soft as that of a traditional family sedan or wagon. An advantage of the expedition's long wheelbase is a resistance to pitching over freeway expansion joints and other irregularities. When driven on back roads, the expedition does not lean unduly in corners, nor does the front end dive excessively under hard braking. an optional load-leveling system uses compressed air to compensate for varying loads while improving ride quality. Built into the system is a one-inch increase in ride height. While serious rock-climbing is not suggested, occasional forays off the beaten path can be undertaken without fear of being left stranded. The 4. 6-liter and 5. 4-liter v8s are identical save for displacement. They are smooth and quiet. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 345 foot-pounds of torque, enabling it to pull a trailer of up to 8300 pounds -- when ordered as a 4x2 with 16-inch wheels and the 3. 73 axle ratio. An expedition 4x4 with the smaller 4. 6-liter engine and big 17-inch wheels can only muster 5500 pounds. summaryeven though this year's changes are relatively minor, the expedition enters its third year as the clear leader of its class. Its blend of strength, refinement, comfort, good road manners and exceptional finish quality is not matched by the current suburban. The shorter length of the expedition is an admission ticket to a larger number of garages. the lure of the expedition is its versatility. It's also stylish, among the best-looking in a group of handsome full-size pickups for the 2006 model year. properly equipped, an f-150 can tow 9,900 pounds or haul more than 3,000 pounds in the bed. The f-150 is comfortable as well, with a quiet and refined ride and comfortable interiors that show attention to detail. Handling is excellent for a pickup. the f-150 earned a five-star safety rating from the government (nhtsa) in frontal crash testing and was named a 'best pick' in offset-crash rating from the insurance institute for highway safety. F-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. Ford has not significantly changed the f-150 since then except to expand the lineup every year with new trim levels, variations, and specialty models. for 2006, supercrew (crew cab) models will be available with a longer, 6. 5-foot bed; as well as the standard 5. 5-foot short bed. A limited-production harley-davidson edition, previously offered on super duty models, is now available as an f-150 supercab (extended cab). The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Wheelbases as long as 163. 0 inches (e. G., a supercab with the 8-foot long bed) are available. three engines are offered: a 4. 2-liter v6, a 4. 6-liter v8, and a 5. 4-liter v8. In the models most consumers will buy, the 4. 6-liter v8 is standard. Xl is readily identifiable by its black grille and fascia, painted silver bumpers and 17-inch steel wheels. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. An stx 2wd flareside retails for $23,030. xlt is the most popular model, nicer and better-equipped than xl. It comes with chrome bumpers and a honeycomb grille that sets it apart from the other models. Carpeting is standard, as is a premium cloth upholstery on the standard bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash; and power windows, mirrors and locks with remote keyless entry are standard. The xlt features an overhead rail console system that the owner can tailor to his or her needs. Fog lamps come standard on 4wd xlts. An xlt supercrew 4wd 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $34,055. fx4 is a special off-road model. The interior features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a floor shifter, and chrome accents; while the exterior is distinguished by a unique grille, 18-inch cast aluminum wheels, and body-color or dark shadow gray bumpers, depending on paint choice. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab, and supercrew body styles, but the long (8-foot) bed is not available. The standard engine is the 5. 4-liter v8. The fx4 has its own instrument package with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather are optional. An f-150 fx4 supercrew 4wd retails for $35,495. lariat is the luxury model, distinguished visually by a unique grille design (chrome housing around arizona beige insert) and bright-finish 18-inch aluminum wheels. Bumpers are chrome or arizona beige. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power-adjustable and leather-trimmed 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustab. walkaroundin the late 1990s, f-150 went aerodynamically curvy, and although it remained number one in sales, not everyone liked the look. So for 2004, ford returned the f-150 to its square-shouldered roots, with a more utilitarian look that continues essentially unchanged for 2006. it's a functional look, but in its own way it's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram. In fact, the f-150 has a unique image, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. It's at once crisp, bold, and sturdy. In short, we think the f-150 is a great-looking truck. the f-150 shares styling cues with ford's handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp downward drop in the forward part of the door windows, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. the whole nose is square in concept, with a large, bold, big-rig grille opening. Yet the front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through to the tailgate. F-150 is both upscale and utilitarian, a look that's very appealing. the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, arizona beige on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch wear a bar-style grille. practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is more than 22 inches deep, for a generous margin when hauling larger cargoes. The basic xl is surprisingly nice. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of texas and cowboys. We love the king ranch, but it's not for everyone. we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they are flat and lack support. The front bench is split three ways. The center section flips down to reveal a center console with storage and cup holders. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms, however, because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight. Rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep, holds a lot of stuff, and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic transmission works very well. radio and hvac (heater) controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Lariat comes with every known.
